After spending the afternoon messing with this software on one of my testing servers I am not convinced that Norton 2004 could be the worst software ever created.
Benchmark tests showed about a 30% decrease in performance, but it felt more like 50% in reality.
Probably the worst feature from my point of view is the "AD Blocker" that comes with it. This software removes all images from a website that are of a certain dimension deeming them AD's. If you are running Norton 2004 and you go to the classifieds section of the site all the navigation buttons will be missing for you. Probably a good deal of content in the forums will be missing as well. Oddly the banner AD's do not seem to be affected.
The un-install process did not actually remove the software, some modules were still on the HD when I was done.
Either way stay away from this, if you are looking for a virus scanner use trendmicro's Internet security www.trendmicro.com.

Yup, It goofed my box up too. It ended up not showing any pictures, and when I copied and pasted I got different things every time. Norton has always been good. I don't know what the deal is with 2004.. Sorry to hear that it set you back hotboat. I had to reload my entire OS before my problems were resolved.
I have been a NSW supporter for years. But you are right about it being a performance hog. I will be formatting my machine here in the next few weeks and I am switching to a free AV. Check out this thread
I have used Symantec products since the beginnings and have always had good luck with their products , I cant express an opinion on 2004 version but all my remote machines running corporate edition arent exibiting any problems . but it is a different product than the home version .
I also have 2005 home version on several windoZe XP and 2000 machines that havent exibited and problems . So there maybe something buggy with 2004 . but according to my observation 2005 home and corporate edition are safe to use on WindoZe XP and 2000 machines .
Food for thought, most of the other antivirus products get their definitions from Symantec, Symantec updates corporate edition almost instantly when a new definition is found , the home versions get it within days and then the third party clients .
