| There are few installations in high performance boating that can match the visual gravity commanded by a full-scale, custom flatbottom: Michael Nims’ ’69 Sanger tests that truth with the expected results, with this gorgeous execution that made its owner’s first V-drive experience very special indeed.
A favorite diversion that is most often engaged on the familiar liquid terrain of the Sacramento River, this 17’6 cutaway shows no hint of its more than three decades on the water. Nims’ water time is further enriched with the satisfaction of building the boat largely in his garage, with the eager help of a handful of friends.
The engine took shape under the owner’s hand, and the rigging came together as a team effort from fellow hot-boating buddies. Good Guys Auto (Sacramento, CA) had a contributing role in the stellar outcome.
Power began as a 427-inch foundation, and was punched out to 442 inches, bored .060 over. A very selective parts roster includes Pink rods, TRW pistons, Dar heads, Comp Cam roller rockers, MSD Ignition and crank trigger, and a set of Barry Grant 850s on an Offenhauser manifold. Nims gooses the setup occasionally with a 200-horse, Cheater Nitrous system.
